Both the grade 1 and grade 3 bands attended the 2009 Georgetown Highland Games and kicked off their 2009 competition season in a big way.

The Grade 1 band debuted their much-anticipated new medley, “Idiomatica”. The piping press have described it as “avant garde”. Although unpopular with traditional enthusiasts, the Georgetown audience responded with loud (and spontaneous) cheers of approval — highly uncommon at Scottish-style pipe band events. “Idiomatica” delivered a strong second for the band among a field that included the Scottish Lion-78th Fraser Highlanders, The Peel Regional Police Pipe Band, and the Halifax-based 78th Highlanders ( Citadel) band.

The Grade 3 band put on an excellent show performing their new set in the traditional “march, strathsepy and reel” category. Their solid efforts saw them awarded the premier prize in a field of six bands.

Pipe Major Ian K. MacDonald was awarded the Professional Piper of the Day for most consistent overall showing in the solo piping events.

On Saturday, May 23, 2009, the Grade 3 Toronto Police Pipe Band traveled to Kingston Ontario to participate in the Fifth Annual “Ontario Power Generation” Celtfest. Scott Bell and members of Kingston’s own Rob Roy Pipe Band organized the event, which was held in the Rideau Acres Campground.

The privately run games were well attended with bands in grade 5, 4, 3, and grade 2. The weather threatened to turn poor, however, the day turned out great, with a good-sized and appreciative crowd taking in the events.

All the judges were asked to prepare sheets from an ensemble perspective. The band put on a good performance, and received a second place finish for their efforts.

Thanks to Pipe Major Scott Bell and the Rob Roy Pipe Band for a great day!

2nd: Toronto Police Pipe Band (Grade 3)

3rd: Arnprior McNab Pipe Band
