The Band
The Toronto Police Pipe Band is one of the world’s best pipe bands. It is estimated that there are over 10,000 pipe bands in the world with the Toronto Police Pipe Band team figuring well in the top 30.
Located in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, the band is completely sponsored by the Toronto Police Service and is proud to serve both the Service and the City of Toronto, Canada’s largest and most cosmopolitan city.
Band membership is made up of both serving Toronto Police officers and civilians. The majority of band members are drawn from the Greater Toronto Area with some members traveling from as far afield as Montreal, Ottawa, the New England states and Michigan, USA.
As ambassadors of both the Toronto Police Service and the City of Toronto, the band is dedicated to playing good music well and to help bring the ancient sounds of the pipes and drums to citizens of Toronto – and the world.
The band is managed under a comprehensive learning framework dedicated to teaching the youth of Toronto and others interested in being the best musicians they can be. A premier grade, or “grade one” band, a less-experienced “grade three” band and an overall “public service” band all come together to form the storied Toronto Police Pipe Band, a band within marching distance of its 100th anniversary (2012).
The band’s leadership includes Pipe Major Ian K. MacDonald, Pipe Sergeant Michael Grey, Pipe Major Brian Urkosky (grade three band), Lead Drummer Doug Stronach, Drum Major Bob Skinner and Constable Jack Wield (Manager).
