TPPB G1 Band Staging Show at Toronto’s El Mocambo Club
The grade one Toronto Police Pipe Band will be presenting a May 15, 2010 concert at Toronto’s iconic El Mocambo, 464 Spadina Avenue, Toronto. The Saturday night concert is slated to begin at 8:00 pm at what is one of Toronto’s most famous club concert venues. The historic “El Mo”, as its known in Toronto, first opened as a music venue in 1850 while serving a dual purpose as a haven for escaped slaves from the U.S.
Elvis Costello’s “Live at the El Mocambo” and the Rolling Stones’ “Love You Live” records are two of the most famous albums to be recorded off the floor of the “El Mo”. The Toronto Police Pipe Band will be recording their current material for release as a “live” record. Audience capacity at the El Mocambo is limited. Tickets are $20.
The Toronto Police Pipe Band is sharing proceeds from the concert event with the El Mocambo’s well-known in-house charity, Serving Charity.
Tickets may be purchased by emailing elmo.tickets@gmail.com
“We were looking for a project that was a little out of the ordinary, that sort of approach really pumps up the team”, said Pipe Major Ian K MacDonald, “the El Mocambo fit the bill in a big way: with an interesting club atmosphere it’s definitely not the usual sort of place for a pipe band concert. I’m looking forward to a great show and a lot of fun”.
“We had every intention of releasing a recording from our show in Lorient, France last August but in true pipe band tradition the weather got in the way”, said Ian, “our Lorient show was staged in a huge tent and just as we started performing torrential rain pummeled the canvas. The result was a really interesting pipe band recording with a sort of background ambient rainy buzz – like a massed band of bees hovering overhead. As a result the recordings were unusable”.
“The El Mo has great acoustic potential as well as excellent in-house recording facilities,” said Doug Stronach, lead drummer of the band, “we’re all really looking forward to laying out our music in an environment where people will be up close to the show and feel an important part of the whole experience. We’re really counting on that to help make the project work”.
Reagan Jones, mid-section lead added, “Like a lot of bands who go the concert route we’ve a few tricks up our sleeves. I know, for a start, I’ll be interested to hear what people have to say about our 2010 medley!”
Said Ian K, “How can we not be excited about playing at a place that’s had U2, Jimi Hendrix, The Police and Meatloaf all play the El Mo stage?! We’re hoping we’ll get a few people out who feel the same way!”

We can’t come to your event but I told Kelsey that we would buy some t-shirts. Next time maybe we can plan a holiday around one of your events.
Have a great concert.
